Week 10 Power Rankings

1. Los Angeles Clippers: 25-7, 9-1
During the Clippers 17 game win streak, Blake Griffin shot above 50% from the field in all of the games. While this team has no identity(read a great piece by the Daily Dime here), maybe they don't need one. 17 wins is 17 wins. (BF)

2. Oklahoma City Thunder: 24-6, 8-2 
-The Thunder would be widely considered the best team if LAC wasn’t on a historic run. They have shown their championship meddle and will continue to improve with their young core. (EJ)

(Reggie Jackson has given the Thunder yet another boost off the bench.)

3. Miami Heat: 21-8, 7-3 
-The Heat have somehow stayed out of the headlines with two of their west rivals stealing the show. Expect them to shoot back into it with games against Dallas and Chicago this week. (BF)

4. San Antonio Spurs: 25-8, 7-3
-This team has some of the greatest offensive balance of any NBA team in the league. Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli continue to play at a high level on scaled back minutes. Second in points and third in point differential, this team is a beast. (AL)
 
5. Golden State Warriors: 21-10, 7-3 
-With every win, the Warriors are becoming more battle tested for the playoffs. It's a complete reflection of Mark Jackson's tough guy mentality that this team is 4th in rebounds without their star center. (BF)

6. New York Knicks: 21-10, 5-5 
-An injury to point guard Raymond Felton will hurt; can they weather the six weeks without him by leaning on extra minutes from Jason Kidd? This team continues to rely heavily on the three point shot, but for now they are falling. (AL)
 
7. Atlanta Hawks: 20-10, 6-4
-The Hawks are putting themselves in contention for a three or four seed in the East with other contenders failing. The question always remains, what do they do with it? (BF)

8. Memphis Grizzlies: 19-9, 5-5
-The Grizz need to continue slowing the game down and letting there bigs do work on the interior. I need to see Marc Gasol play better after the team has lost 2 of its past 3. (AL)
 
9. Indiana Pacers: 18-13, 8-2
-Indiana was able to win their brawl of a contest against Memphis this past week. They have shown all season that they are elite rebounders and defenders. The question remains can they score enough? (EJ)

(The Pacers could really use Granger's scoring right about now.)

 
10. Houston Rockets: 17-14, 7-3
-Houston has lost back to back games, but is playing well winning 5 in a row before the losses. James Harden is playing great basketball and Omer Asik is strengthening his case for most improved player of the year. (AL)
 
11. Chicago Bulls: 16-13, 5-5
-As the season lets on we are seeing the Bulls miss Derick Rose more and more. Their offense is based on execution not elite scoring. This means that their offense has a higher degree of difficulty, which is what you have seen in recent losses. (EJ)


12. Milwaukee Bucks: 16-13, 6-4
-The Bucks have shown great offensive strength throughout the season. But can this team beat the best when the game is slowed down come playoff time? (EJ)

13. Denver Nuggets: 18-15, 7-3
-The Nuggets have played a ruthless schedule on the road. Since when did the Nugs piss someone off in the NBA office? (BF)

14. Portland Trailblazers: 16-14, 8-2

-Portland has a very good starting five and no bench at all. If they are going to make a playoff push I look for them to be one of the more active teams in trade talk. (EJ)

15. Minnesota Timberwolves: 14-13, 6-4

-The Timberwolves are around a .500 team without Ricky Rubio. With a healthy Rubio they are a much better team. The question is if they can get enough of a healthy Rubio to get in the playoffs playing their best ball. (EJ)

16. Los Angeles Lakers: 15-16, 6-4
-Kobe claims the Lakers are old, and that is why they are struggling. The excuses are getting pretty old for the fans in purple and gold as well. (BF)

17. Brooklyn Nets: 16-15, 4-6

Firing Avery Johnson won't solve the Net's issues. Listen to our podcast and you will know, but I put this on Deron Williams, who continues to play poorly.  This team can be dangerous but right now no one is fearing them, even after winning both games of the new PJ Carlesimo regime. (AL)

18. Philadelphia 76ers: 15-17, 3-7
-They have lost 8 of 10 and looked horrible in doing so. Andrew Bynum needs to get healthy if this team wants to make the playoffs. (AL)
 
19. Utah Jazz: 15-17, 3-7
-This team is either playing under their capabilities or is just not very good. Either, way it seems times to give Favors and Kanter more minutes. Expect Jefferson and/or Milsap to be moved, especially with the Jazz playing so poorly. (EJ)
 
20. Boston Celtics: 14-16, 3-7
-Disappointing losses to both the Clippers and Golden State have left this team under 500. Maybe they can grab a win tonight against the Kings, but this team needs to turn it around soon. The return of Avery Bradley when they return from the west coast should help. (AL)


21. Dallas Mavericks: 13-19, 2-8
-Dirk is back but he is not curing all this teams' ails. OJ Mayo continues to play well, but the rest of the group lacks consistency. Darren Collison may have had the play of the year with his one footed three to force OT, but they lost anyways. (AL)


22. Toronto Raptors: 11-20, 7-3
-Toronto has won 7 of 8 and has turned around their season. Demar Derozan looked great the past couple weeks. They may pass Phili in the Atlantic if both teams continue in there current directions. (AL)
 
23. Orlando Magic: 12-19, 4-6
-The Magic have really been hurting since Glen Davis went down to injury. Even with Arron Afflalo dropping 26 and 28 in games last week, this team couldn't break the slide and has now lost six in a row. (BF) 

(Arron Afflalo has quite a heavier load on his shoulders these days.)

24. Detroit Pistons: 12-22, 5-5
-With Drummond coming along quicker than anyone thought he would the future now seems extremely bright for the Pistons. Right now Drummond is only playing 20 minutes a game, this number will increase as the season goes along and the Celtics will be better for it. With Drummond, Monroe, and  Knight coming along the Pistons are the best of the basement. (EJ)
 
25. Sacramento Kings: 11-20, 4-6
-With the Cousins Scandal supposedly behind them(maybe), this team can try to get back to winning. As good as they looked against Boston, it's tough to think they can stay that consistent, and Cousins can stay out of trouble. (BF)

26. Phoenix Suns: 11-21, 4-6
-Ohh the Suns. After losing a buzzer beater to the Knicks, they followed it up with three more losses on the road. This team is crashing, having lost six straight. (BF)

27. New Orleans Hornets: 7-24, 2-8
-Eric Gordon is finally healthy and scored 24 points in 24 minutes in his debut. I can't wait to see what this team does in January with a fully healthy roster. Davis and Gordon are the futures of this franchise. (AL)


28. Charlotte Bobcats: 8-23, 1-9
-They won! They won! Now the big step is where do they turn to prevent the next losing streaking from happening. (BF)

29. Cleveland Cavaliers: 7-25, 2-8
-Tristan Thompson’s improved play might make trading Varejao more palpable. As the season move along I warm on the idea of Cleveland moving Varejao. AV is a good player who is on a light contract but by the time his contract is up Cleveland might not be a playoff team. (EJ)
 
30. Washington Wizards: 4-25, 1-9
-The Wizards currently don't have anyone averaging over 16 points a game, anyone averaging over 8 rebounds a game, or anyone averaging over 5 assists a game. Thank god for RGIII. (BF)

The streaking Spurs look to have once again taken control of this division from the Grizzlies, but this isn't the only story-line here in the Southwest.  Read after the jump for the division breakdown:


San Antonio Spurs:

Since Dropping 4 of 5 games in mid-December, the Spurs have now won 6 in a row including 4 divisional games all while reassuring Spurs fans that this team remains tops in the Southwest. The Spurs are both 3rd in points per game (105.5) and Point differential (9.0), but really across the board in all offensive categories this team ranks in the top 5.  Despite having some excellent front court players in Duncan and Tiago Splitter, this team does struggle at rebounding due to its lack of athleticism.  I'd say this is the teams' biggest obstacle at making a long playoff run, as it ranks 16th in rebound differential.  As I mentioned last week and will again this week, the team has 7 players averaging above 9.5 points per game in what is an impressive display of depth most teams just can't match.  On any given night, one of these 7 (or yet even another bench player like Steven Jackson) can lead this team in scoring.  While they are flawed as pointed in out in their rebounding woes, the Spurs are the best in the division and one of the top in the NBA.  As always, Coach Pop has this group playing at a high level with consistency.


Memphis Grizzlies:

A rough week for Memphis could be turned around quickly as they face the fading Celtics as well as Western Conference Pushovers Phoenix and Sacramento in the coming week.  What plagued the Grizz this past week was horrendous shooting.  As a team they were not able to shoot over 40.5% during any of their three games, displaying both a lack of confidence as well as execution.  Going into the 4th in Indianapolis this team was up 7, but was just unable to execute as the hounding Pacer defense proved too much for them to overcome.  I really need to see this team work Marc Gasol in the post a little more, which would allow Rudy Gay to work off the ball, something he can excel at with his quickness.  Being a halfcourt team, they need to run crisper plays and get there scorers into better positions.  While the team plays great defense itself, it won't win big games without the ability to have a go-to play or player.  This team will no doubt turn it around and get back to winning ways after last week, but i can't say they have my confidence as a dangerous team if there offense doesn't make significant progress.  They are 1st in points allowed per game at 90 but are in the bottom half in both points scored and shooting percentage.  One aspect I do love about this team is that they are 3rd in the NBA in free throw percentage as a team, shooting nearly 80%.  If they only had a go to scorer....


Houston Rockets:

The Rockets faced excellent competition this week, as they fell short to San Antonio in a shootout and got crushed by OKC before delivering the blowout to the Hawks.  This up and down week for the team from ClutchCity was not unexpected nor was it discouraging.  After winning 7 of 8 heading into this week, the team faced one of the most difficult 2 game stretches any team can face as it lost to both the Spurs and Thunder. The response against a good Atlanta team was exactly what Rockets fans wanted to see as they played the uptempo style to perfection. They scored 26 fast break points, but even pushing the pace on made baskets and getting shots up before the defense was settled allowed a bevy of open three point shots. The team shot 55% from downtown making 16 of 29.   Houston continues to be near the top of the league in scoring sitting just a tenth of a point outside of the Thunder who average 105.9 points per game. The backcourt acquired in the offseason, James  Harden and Jeremy Lin, look to be getting in rhythm with each other, and as a fan it's a really fun sight to behold.  As both are excellent ball handlers, it allows the Rockets to outlet the ball to either player getting the ball up into the offensive end nearly immediately upon having possession.  We all know Harden, Lin, Omer Asik, and more recently Chandler Parsons have been getting huge props around the NBA, but I want to zero in on another young stud for this team, second year player Marcus Morris. Morris is a X-factor for this team as his athleticism around the hoop as well as his ability to knock down the three ball have been a big part of the turnaround for Houston.  He is averaging 9.5 points to go along with 4 boards, but he is shooting nearly 40% from downtown, a terrific number.  Houston has scorers at every position and Morris is just one of many contributors, but his game looks to be one that will play in the league for many years to come.


Dallas Mavericks:

The Mavs ended their six game slide with a win against the lowly Wizards last night, a game in which Dirk played his best ball since returning.  I'm still skeptical whether this team has the ability to make waves in the playoffs, but I do enjoy it's veteran core, especially the inspired play of Vince Carter and Chris Kaman of late.  It's still difficult to evaluate this team without Dirk being fully healthy, but last night making 5 of 7 shots for 11 points in 17 minutes was a step in the right direction.  If Dirk can get healthy, and we will know this if he is getting to the free throw line or not, then I still think this team can be dangerous come playoff time, but for now I see them as a team just missing the postseason. I hope I'm wrong though, cause it'd be fun to see Vincesanity do things like this on a bigger stage (The reaction of the fans sitting courtside was exactly my reaction from my couch):

Eric Gordon made a loud return to action scoring 24 points in 24 minutes while dishing out 7 dimes in the teams win against the Bobcats.  He struggled in the loss to Atlanta, but I can only assume that as he gets in game shape, he will be better at playing in multiple games in a week.  His introduction into this lineup does amazing things for this team as it gives them not only a true play-maker  but another ball handler on the floor.  All I want from the Hornets is for them to work on the pick and roll/pop with Gordon and Davis.  This team could be solid if they are able to play those two in a two-man-game at the top of the key successfully. Okay, I can only stomach enough Hornets talk right now. Can Will Ferrell announce another lineup for the Hornets already? I could talk about that all day...

Atlantic Division Roundup: Nets Shake Things Up

This has been a really rough stretch for the Atlantic Division as a whole, as only the Knicks and Raptors are above 500 in their past ten games. The Nets had a coaching change and the Celtics limped through their west coast trip.  Let's break down what has been going on.


The New York Knicks:

The age of this team looks to be catching up to them as injuries have been the major story-line in New York this week. News out of NYC is that PG Raymond Felton will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken finger, leaving Jason Kidd and Pablo Prigioni to handle the PG duties.  Felton is third on the team in scoring at 15.8 a game and first in assists at 6.2.  His ability to push the tempo and stretch the floor will be sorely missed.  Unfortunately for the Knicks, his injury is not the only one limiting the team right now.  Carmelo Anthony has missed the previous two games with a hyper-extended knee and is expected to miss at least one more.  In his absence JR Smith has been the teams go-to offensive player. In the two games Carmelo missed he scored 28 and 27 respectively.  We'll need to see how this team responds to being down a floor leader in Felton and how the depth is affected with the above mentioned injuries as well as the injury to backup center Rasheed Wallace, not to mention the reintroduction of Amar'e into the lineup this week.

Brooklyn Nets:

This team is now solely in the hands of Deron Williams.  I have been all over Deron this year, and rightfully so, as he mixed his poor play with a poor attitude. These weaknesses by Deron have had yet another of his coaches canned, as Johnson followed in the footsteps of the great Jerry Sloan in being outed by the talented point guard.  I think Deron is very skilled, without question his ball handling and ability to create in space is superior, but right now he can't shoot nor finish at the rim. For the season he continues to struggle, scoring 16.3 points, dishing out 7.5 assists and shooting a horrendous 39.9% from the field.  A franchise player shooting below 40% is an absolute joke, too bad no one in Brooklyn is laughing.  We will know soon what type of makeup this kid has, because, as I mentioned above, it's his team now more than it has ever been before. Boston Celtics:

The Celtics got absolutely dominated by the teams of California this week, losing by a combined 65 points in their three games.  Rajon Rondo, who missed the Warriors game with a bruised hip, looked over matched facing rival Chris Paul (those two do not get along) and was underwhelming in his return against Sacramento.  This team relies on his energy and his ability to either create for himself or others, neither of which he did on this Cali trip. The impending return of Wilcox and Bradley, both of whom run the floor well with Rondo should snap him out of this funk.  The lone bright spot for the C's has been the outstanding play of Jared Sullinger.  The rookie  had averged 9 points and 7 rebounds over his last 5 outings, but it was energy and effort that were the real bright spots.  if he continues to play at a high level, Brandon Bass will become expendable.  For more on the Celtics, please read fellow Senior Blogger Evan Javel's piece, posted below the Atlantic Division roundup.

Philadelphia 76ers:

I will admit that this team has had one of the toughest schedule over the past few weeks, but there performance is completely unacceptable.  Once thought of as an early season success story, this team looks lost on the court recently.  They lack a go-to scorer, and while he has showed flahes, Evan Turner does not look ready in any way to be that guy.  Jrue Holiday continues to play well scoring nearly 19 a game on 45% shooting, but is lacking a good partner for the pick and roll/pop game that is necessary for all teams to be able to run.  Thaddeus Young is the only player shooting over 50% on the team and no other player scoring over 7 points a game is shooting over 45% except for center Spencer Hawes who is shooting a pedestrian 45% (45% for a guard is acceptable, for a center it is poor).  This team just need Andrew Bynum back, they are hard to watch with their current makeup.  BRICK HOUSES ARE BEING BUILT EVERY NIGHT BY THIS TEAM.

Toronto Raptors:

This team continues to play extremely well.  Despite a lot of early season criticism, this team has showed poise and ability to create for one another.  DeMar Derozan has looked excellent in the past couple weeks, showing flashes of the star that could be.  Ed Davis continues to be an excellent glue guy, attacking the glass  and providing great energy. The great news in Toronto is that Kyle Lowry has not only returned to action from his injuury, but he has played really well in his two games since coming back. He has averaged 16.5 points, and 7 assists all while shooting an torrid 58%. With Lowry back in the fold, I think this team can continue to make moves up the east, possibly catching Phili in the next week or two. The Raptors have been the best team in the Atlantic over the past 10 games!
