Official trailer for DEATH BY VHS!

I'm gearing up to tear through this stack of screeners soon, and one of the films coming up is DEATH BY VHS (formerly THE SCREAM MACHINE), a new indie horror anthology revolving around a cursed VCR. Here is the synopsis:
A battered and mysterious VCR...A bevy of lethal video- tapes... These are the building blocks of horror in "DEATH BY VHS". A mind blowing descent into madness and death. Five shocking vignettes, designed to take your sanity and devour your soul! Mild curiosity leads to severe consequences when a couple rents a supposedly cursed video cassette recorder. An urban legend renowned for leaving a trail of agonizing and torturous death. Unbelieving, they take the plunge... And another legend is horrifyingly born... Do you dare give fate a winning hand, and test yourself against the hellish consequences of the VHS machine? Insert Cassette Press Play...DIE!
The official trailer for the film hit the web last week, and showcases some cool practical f/x, numerous bong hits, and a hatchet-wielding psycho in a pink bunny costume. Give the trailer a look below:

There's no official release date for the DVD, but you can catch the DEATH BY VHS world premiere at the Phoenix ComiCon on May 25th! Also, the DVD will have some extras, including: A teaser trailer, a music video by "Scattered Guts," and interviews with cast & crew. When the street date for the DVD release is announced, I'll be sure to let you all know! Stay tuned!

R.I.P. - RAY HARRYHAUSEN (June 29th, 1920 - May 7th, 2013)

Ray and his two bodyguards.

It pains me to think that the world has lost one of the greatest visual f/x artists of all time; Ray Harryhausen was "movie magic" personified. To be certain, no one lives forever (Dick Clark proved that when he shuffled off this mortal coil just over a year ago), but it is still a shock to the system when someone you respect and love passes on.

I never met Ray Harryhausen, but I've always wanted to. Had I ever had the chance to cross paths with the once living legend, I would have feverishly shook his hand and thanked him immensely. His divine stop-motion creations unlocked my imagination, and brought me so much joy and excitement in my formative years. In a period of my life where liking monster movies, horror flicks, comic books, and anything similar was frowned upon (i.e. before it all became the norm... curse this generation!), the films that featured Harryhausen's creations were a secret safe haven for me.

Years later, I still find solace in the adventures of Sinbad the Sailor, and enjoy the wanton destruction of major landmarks in classics like IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA and EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS. It satisfies the child within me, and takes me back to a simpler time, before the full time job, and bills, and debt, and all the other day to day bullsh*t that makes up this thing called adulthood. It's also a welcome break from all the CGI-heavy films coming out these days. I'm not going to sit here and bad mouth CGI f/x artists; they work hard and their job is not as easy as "cut, paste, render, repeat" like many people think.

However, I will say that they do have to put in far less effort as Ray Harryhausen (and other visual f/x artists like him, such as his mentor, Willis O'Brien) did, because stop-motion animation is one of the most difficult and painstaking types of f/x work you could ever attempt. (I should know, I filmed a stop-motion animated Godzilla film for a high school project well over a decade ago, and it took me a month to get about fifteen minutes of viable footage.) It's a skill that is not easily mastered and takes the patience of Job to accomplish, and Ray Harryhausen was the king of the craft. Unlike the animation I've seen in so many other films, Ray had the ability to pull it off rather smoothly, and imbue his creations with an actual personality.

I grin every time the Rhedosaurus from BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS snaps up a cop head first, because the officer was annoying it with small arms fire. I cheer on the Cyclops when he battles the Dragon in THE  7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (even though I already know the outcome); I pity the poor Ymir from 20,000,000 MILES TO EARTH  because its a rather docile stranger in a strange land that is forced by various tormentors to become a marauding monster; I simply marvel at the skeletal warriors, Talos, and the mutli-headed Hydra from JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, as well as the multi-limbed Kali from GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. And is anything truly cooler than seeing cowboys rope and wrangle a raging T-Rex in VALLEY OF GWANGI?

Everything Harryhausen created is solid gold in my eyes and thankfully his work will live on for many years to come as we enter an increasingly digital age. The man is gone, but he left behind a legacy that will continue to ignite the imaginations of youngsters, and inspire others to follow their dreams of being animators and filmmakers. Ray Harryhausen will be sorely missed, but he had a damned good run. He created Dynamation (a technique still used by animators today), earned a Lifetime Achievement Oscar, and inspired a generation of some of cinema's greatest directors and effects artists, including: Steven Spielberg, Phil Tippett, John Landis, Tim Burton, Rick Baker, David Allen, Mick Garris, George Lucas, James Cameron, and so many others.

Few have managed to capture the hearts, minds, and the imaginations of so many. So thank you Ray, and may you rest in peace good sir.

P.S. - Regardless of what anyone says.... I still think Bubo is awesome!

An event-filled weekend awaits you! Get some free comic books, celebrate Star Wars, or catch a film screening or festival!

Hey b-movie fans! It's going to be a gorgeous weekend (in this neck of the woods at least), and there are a lot of cool, nerdy things going on all over the place! Here's a small list of events that are happening over the next few days; some are national, some international, but most are localized. If you know of something happening that is worth mentioning on my list, leave a comment below, e-mail me, or hit me up on Facebook or Twitter.

... and also with you.

MAY 4TH:
INTERNATIONAL STAR WARS DAY ("MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU..." ALL DAY - EVERYWHERE)
Started officially in 2011, International Star Wars Day (which began in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) has since grown (especially now that Disney owns the Star Wars name brand). Look out for screenings of the films at some theatrical venues, or if you live in California, check out the free parade Disney is having at their Hollywood Studios tomorrow! Need some ideas on what to do to celebrate your fave sci-fi franchise? Then head on over to the Star Wars Day Blog for some hints!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY (ALL DAY - EVERYWHERE!)
Head out to your local comic book store to get freebies! Many shops have contests, giveaways, and special offers on this, their most holy (and busiest) of days. Also, don't be surprised if the shop you visit also happens to be celebrating the aforementioned STAR WARS DAY!

SALT CITY HORROR FEST (THE PALACE THEATER - SYRACUSE, NY - 11 AM)
As posted HERE, this horror/exploitation/cult film fest will take place ALL DAY at the Palace Theater on James St. The movie lineup consists of: ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (in anaglyph 3D!), NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE MANSON FAMILY, HOUSE AT THE EDGE OF THE PARK, ROBOCOP, NEKROMANTIK, and FRIGHT NIGHT! Tickets are $20 bucks at the door, and you can come and go all day as long as you have your wristband. Also, bring extra money with you because they serve all sorts of snacks and beer, plus there will be vendors there selling DVDs, Blu-rays, collectibles, and more! Maybe I'll see you there!

RIFFING MYSELF W/JOEL HODGSON (DRYDEN THEATER - SYRACUSE, NY - 8PM)
An intimate, funny, one-man show with the creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Cinematic Titanic. Get all the feedback about Joel's early years as a ventriloquist and stand-up comedian, and discover every little detail that went into the creation of movie riffing and one of the greatest cult comedy shows of all time. I caught his act in Scranton back in February and it was really interesting, and Joel is one cool cat. (Even managed to sneak in a photo op with him before he escaped.) The show kicks off at 8 PM at the Dryden Theater. It's $20 for the main performance and $50 for the performance, and a post meet & greet + a screening of an MST3K episode. (Most likely, "The Pod People.")

FANTASM SCREENING (SYRACUSE, NY - SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY - SHAFFER ART BUILDING)
Kyle Kuchta visited six horror cons and made this endearing documentary about the conventions and the fans (and guests) that attend them. The abridged version of his thesis film is being shown for free on Saturday night to cap off a two day student film fest. I'm not quite sure about what time his film is being screened, so be sure to check out the FANTASM Facebook page to keep up to date!

MAY 5TH:
EXFEST III (INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - PHILADELPHIA, PA - 11 AM TO 11 PM)
I've always wanted to attend the EXHUMED FILMS' hosted eX-FeST. They show five films in glorious 35mm and never give away the lineup until the day of the event. Tickets are $26 (if any are left after the pre-orders... which is apparently quite rare). Visit THIS PAGE to snag tickets and enjoy the insanity on Sunday!

That's all I know of at the moment, but if you know of an event happening over the next two days that warrants a mention, then by all means contact me and I'll add it to the list! Have a great weekend everybody, and enjoy the awesome!

New redband trailer for AFTERSHOCK!

I've been following Eli Roth's (who both produced and stars in) AFTERSHOCK for a while and I'm eager to check it out. Eli plays a dorky American tourist who ends up in an underground nightclub in Chile when an earthquake hits. Stuff crumbles and collapses, people are crushed to death, and the survivors have to dig their way to the top to escape the giant deathtrap. (Kind of like a land-based POSEIDON ADVENTURE... but with lots of gore.)

Naturally things are even worse once they find a way out because a nearby prison emptied out during the quake, leaving a crowd of violent (and apparently very rapey) criminals to run amok amidst the chaos! Check out the new redband trailer below:

Wait what?! After all the awfulness the main characters survive, they get wiped out by a freakin' tsunami?! Jeez movie trailer, that's a pretty huge spoiler!

So after viewing the latest trailer what do you think of AFTERSHOCK? Would you go see it in a theater? Would you give it a rental? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

AFTERSHOCK gets a limited theatrical release on May 10th, with a DVD & Blu-ray release soon after.

23:59 coming to DVD & Blu-ray in June!

I just got a press release from the folks at Magnet Releasing/Magnolia Pictures about this cool ghost story from Singapore. "23:59" is hitting DVD & Blu-ray on June 4th; here's more info about this release.

It doesn't look like anything super awesome, but I'm a sucker for a good ghost story, so I'll probably give it a look. Once again, "23:59" comes out on DVD & Blu-ray on June 4th, and it is currently available for pre-order at Amazon.com (for about $24.00 or so).
